Interviewing:Daniel Saunders

What are some parts of this production that avoids “easy” dramaturgical choices?

For instance, the ghostly Polyneikes that haunts basically the entire events of Antigone. That is something that has to be acted out as transcendental — something that’s there, something that has an impact upon the characters, something that can’t be fully explicated or rationally explained.

And that adds a whole interesting dimension to the production, especially when you consider the different character dynamics between those who can see Polyneikes — like Haimon — and those who cannot, such as my character,

The use of Auslan, particularly with the character of Polyneikes. In my mind, it’s a very interesting, very intelligent staging choice. Because in the original Greek myths, shades couldn’t speak when they were brought out of Hades — it required a very specific, elaborate sacrificial system for them to speak.

Daniel Saunders is playing ARISTOS (CHORUS).
